Crazy for Colors!

I LOVE teaching all about color words! Colors are something that all children have schema in, and I think that's why they love learning about them so much! Talking about colors also gives a lot of children opportunities to be successful!

I usually spend 2-3 weeks focusing on color words. Many of the students come in knowing their colors, but not knowing how to read the color words themselves.

I always start with our emergent storybook Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? Even though it is a pattern book, we use it as a close read for a week.

Every day, I would introduce a color word. We would start by singing the Frog Street Press Color Word songs. These are amazing and the kiddos love them! Here are a few examples of the songs :)

I also have songbook versions of each song that you can have for free here!

Then we would make a color map for each color. The kids would give their idea and I would write the word. Then, they would come up and help me with the pictures.

We also used a TON of resources from Cara Carroll's True Colors packet. This AMAZING packet really gives students a ton of practice with each color/color word.

True Colors {A Color Word Identification Practice Packet}

We used her emergent readers for each color (obviously it would match our color for the day!). These are a few pages of a book my student completed.

Then for morning work, my students would do a color word find (also from the True Colors pack). This was awesome practice for reading and writing each color word.

We also practiced identifying the color words by doing a sequencing/matching activity. We retold the story together, and matched the color word to the animal as the story went on. SO much fun!

At the end of Brown Bear week, each student made their own Brown Bear book. Students got a small book with each of the pictures that the had to color the correct color. Then, they cut and glued the words to match. They turned out so cute and are a favorite for my kiddos in their independent book tubs!

(Picture to come!)

And since my kiddos do get so strong in reading the pattern, I usually make a class version too! I wanted to make a template for you all, but it is so personalized, you'll just have to use my idea and make it for yourself :) They kiddos could not believe they got a book about themselves!

(Picture to come!)

The next week's book in our color extravaganza was Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes! Who doesn't love Pete? (If you say you don't like him, I think my kids might stone you!)

We had a BLAST learning more about color words this week! We continued learning about a color each day. It became an exciting surprise each day when my students heard my letter each morning and learned what color we would be exploring that day!

To assess my students in their retelling of Pete the Cat and their color word identification, we used the retelling page from this awesome FREE Pete the Cat pack! (Can you tell I'm cheap and use as many freebies as possible?? :)) My students had to cut out each retelling card, color it to match the words, and then glue them in order of the story. They turned out super cute! (Besides the brown paper...it was what we had the most of!)

(Picture to come!)

We also got to make Pete himself! It is AMAZING how well my kiddos follow directions when they get to make something fun!

We began by discussing how when Pete stepped in something, his shoes turned that color. For example, when Pete stepped in strawberries, it turned his shoes red. So my kiddos had to think of their own idea of what Pete could step in, and what color it would turn his shoes. So of the ideas were hysterical! It was also a really great way to assess to see if my kiddos understand that concept in the book (what Pete stepped in changed the color of his shoes!).

Here are a few examples of my students finished products! They turned out even cuter then I expected. You can get your templates to create your own Pete for free HERE!

Since the end of our Pete week was basically the end of our direct instruction of colors, I wanted to do a quick check at the end of the day to see how many color words my students could identify. So once again, I found this freebie Pete the Cat color book.

pete the cat shoes book.pdf - I love Pete the cat! Don't know if I'll ever be in a classroom young enough to teach him but just in case!

Students read the sentence on each page, and color the shoes to match the words. I watched to see if my students could read the words, or if they were able to look up on the word wall and use it as a resource. They actually did much better then I thought!!

So this week, boy were we surprised to be reading another Pete book, Pete the Cat and His 4 Groovy Buttons. Although this book is not about colors, we are beginning to learn new word work games for color words.

These games are from Cara Carroll's True Colors pack again! This first game is a matching game. Students match the paint splotch to the color word and then complete the optional response sheet. We did this as a whole group game, and then put it at the word work center as a matching game.

Today, we worked on our predictable sentences with color words. Once again, we built the sentences together as a whole group and choral read them. Now my students will be able to try to build the sentences independently in the word work center.

To really challenge them, we tried this True/False game. My students really had to think about what color word they were reading and if it matched the color on the ice cream cone. I had them work together with a partner next to them to decide if it was true or false. They LOVED it!!

To finish off color word fun, my students made a class book of our favorite colors! You can get the template for it here :)

Are you crazy for colors?

Book Talk Tuesday! Want your kids to be kind at recess? (with a FREEBIE!)

Blogging two days in a row? WHAT? I'm definitely going to try to blog more often and since I'm on a roll, I'm going to share one of my favorite books with you for Book Talk Tuesday!! I thought for the next couple of weeks, I would share some of my favorite character education books with you!

These are my favorite books to use when teaching students to be kind. I teach kindness hand in hand with teaching about friendship. The books below are just a few of the books I read to my kinders each year. These books are ESPECIALLY helpful when teaching kindness at recess, which at least for my kiddos, was a really difficult task!

I'm sure that this is not a new find for many of you, but one of my FAVORITE books to read to teach about kindness/friendship is The Recess Queen!

What better kindergarten experience could there be for kiddos to relate to than RECESS? Through this story, Mean Jean, the Recess Queen, learns to be a kind friend when someone asks her to play. The other kiddos realize that she is only mean because she is lonely and wanted a friend.

It gives them tons of examples of what not to do at recess, especially being physical (which I strongly stress is VERY WRONG while reading). I often read this on the first day of school, right before we go out to our first recess. It is a great way to introduce your recess rules and the importance of being a kind friend!

Through this book I also make sure that I give my kiddos the language they need to ask someone to play. Some of them are so shy/non-verbal in the beginning of the school year, they use inappropriate language/actions because they don't know how else to ask someone to play!

Another favorite of mine is Chrysanthemum. Poor Chrysanthemum gets made fun of because her name is so different from anyone else's. We see throughout the story how horrible it makes Chrysanthemum feel. In the end, a teacher makes her feel good about herself and proud of her name.

This is also a perfect book to read when teaching kindness at recess, because recess is often a time where kiddos think they can get away with being unkind since they are out of earshot of the teacher. Since in the story, the students never actually apologize to Chrysanthemum for making fun of her, this book is when I introduce our special strategy. You can get get a copy of the language I use with my kiddos for FREE here :)

The students "act out" the apology of the other kiddos to Chrysanthemum and practice our apology strategy this way. Practicing as another "person" gives them the language and tools to use in a non-threatening way.

I also often read Hey Little Ant! This is also a perfect book to read to teach kindness at recess. I cannot tell you how many times I see my little ones ripping branches off of trees or stomping on spiders. They just don't understand that they are hurting another living thing. Hey Little Ant lets kids hear the perspective of the little ant and I find that many of them "see the light."

I often use the motto "Keep nature in nature" when we are out at recess and encourage the kiddos to not only be kind to one another, but kind to nature as well.

These ideas, read-alouds, and resources are just a smidgen of what is included in my Because I'm Happy! Character Education pack. It's a YEARS worth of read-alouds, posters, activities, emergent readers, craftivities, and more to help teach your primary kiddos the importance of having good character.

It's not done yet, but my goal is to have it finished by summer! We'll see how that goes :)

Peek at my Halloween week! 10/28

Happy Halloween week! I love weeks like this because the kiddos are so excited to come to school each day and do all of the fun activities planned!

I'm linking up with Mrs. Wills Kindergarten, link up your visual plans with her and check out the plans of so many other awesome bloggers.

My 4-day week is jam-packed full of Halloween goodness.  We are so busy, that we honestly do not even have time for literacy/math stations this week...so I left them out of my plans. Our anchor text this week is There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bat! We are going to be focusing on rhyming words during our mini lessons.

We are also going to be learning bat facts and making a little bat craftivity. I'm using the template from A Cupcake for the Teacher's Going Batty craftivity, but my babies are not at that writing stage yet!

We are also making tons of class books! My kiddos love reading these during our "we time," (partner reading/table reading), and I wanted to make a bunch this week since we are between writing units! I also really wanted to focus on illustrations so I leave lots of room for pictures!

We are making one about our Halloween costumes and practicing strong illustrations and stretchy snake words!

We are also making one about bat facts that is SUPER open-ended. This way my kiddos could state simply that " bats at black" or "bats fly" or could be as deep as "bats are nocturnal" or "bats are not birds."

Lastly, we are making a class book to go with our read aloud The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid Of Anything.

We are going to make a circle map of the things we are scared of, and then make our class book of things we are not afraid of.

We are also making a pumpkin glyph. We have a beautiful new bulletin board outside of our classroom and I want to show our wonderful work to the school!

I will post some of our Halloween festivities later this week! Tomorrow, look for a post on ways to use those cute Dollar Tree and Target Dollar Spot buys!

Have a great week!

Peek at My Week, Oops, and a Freebie!

Here's a little peek into my week! This week, we are reading The Three Billy Goats Gruff! I know it's not very October-y but it's a cute story!

My kiddos are working on retelling and understanding the sequence of a story, so I made these cute little retelling pieces and a sequencing activity for The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

You can get that freebie here!

Here is the peek at my week! Link up with Mrs. Wills Kindergarten to share your visual plans too!

And I have to slap my hand. I started a cute little giveaway last week for my new product and naturally I get busy and don't even give one away! I'm horrible. Sorry!

Anyway...congrats Rosey! You win my Fallin' for Fall Math and Literacy Stations! It just goes to show that they save the best for last! You will be receiving an email from me tonight :)

Have a great week!

Peek at my Week! 10/14 and Giveaway!

Last week was spider week! We had so much fun learning spider facts and I even convinced a few of my little girls that spiders aren't all scary! Winner in my book :)

Here are a few pictures of some of our spider-tivities last week! (Sorry for the blurry iPhone pics!)

First, we made a counting spider. The kiddos first had to count out 8 legs to glue on the spider. Then, the mommy/daddy spider had babies (1-8) and had to draw the numeral and quantity of spiders on each leg.

All week we were reading The Very Busy Spider and discussing what it meant to be busy. The kiddos each made another spider and dictated to me something that they are always very busy doing!

Next, I FINALLY finished my Fallin' for Fall Math and Literacy Stations pack! It includes 20 CCSS aligned stations! I worked really hard on this one and truly designed it for my kiddos needs! I have tried out almost all of the games on them (we're continuing to play them this week and next week) and they've been a hit!
